Conflict. Christmas. These two words, in my mind, don't go together. My Christmases throughout my childhood and adult years have been times of peace, not conflict. Did you know that Christians are now seeing conflicts surrounding Christmas? ...employees refusing to say "Merry Christmas" but instead, "Happy Holidays" ...the forced removal of Nativity scenes in public and some private places ...writing X-mas instead of "Christmas" ...claiming that the Christmas holiday was originally pagan and that we shouldn't celebrate it The War on Christmas: Battles in Faith, Tradition, and Religious Expression is a book designed to confront the arguments and conflict surrounding Christmas. At first, my thought was, "Here we go, another book on all of the reasons why Christians shouldn't have a Christmas tree, hang stockings, etc., etc., etc." Well, I was wrong. This is an excellent book, one that my family is reading through in our evening Bible devotional times together. My husband is enjoying this book so much, that he is also teaching about the misconceptions and conflicts surrounding Christmas in our adult small group class on Sunday mornings about church, using this book as one of the helpful resources in his studies. For now, though, I want to leave you with a bit from Chapter 14 from The War on Christmas: Battles in Faith, Tradition, and Religious Expression: What is the significance of the name "Jesus"? "Jesus", the name, comes from the roots of the Hebrew language and means "Jehovah is salvation," and "God our Savior". Wow. What a powerful name! Did you know that the male name, "Joshua", is also a form of the word "Jesus"? Chapter 14 of The War on Christmas pinpoints various Scripture verses from both the Old and the New Testament and shows why the genealogies of Jesus' family history are actually listed in the Bible. There are important elements we can learn from reading through and studying these genealogies! Every part of the Bible is inspired by God and has an important purpose. You'll get a glimpse of the many prophecies surrounding the Messiah and why Jesus is the only God-man who has ever fulfilled all of those prophecies. This video, below, shows some of the misconceptions Americans have about the birth of Christ. I found this interesting! Jesus...Name above all names, Beautiful Savior, Glorious Lord... ...Emmanuel, God With Us, Blessed Redeemer, Living Word. Those are all some amazing names of God. If you have junior high or high school youth in your home, this book could be an excellent choice to explore together as a family. Whether you are excited about celebrating Christmas, or you feel it is a sin to celebrate Christmas, I think you will appreciate much of the material in this new book. We have! You may find that it's easier for each person to have their own copy to read and follow along as everyone takes turns reading from the book. This particular book, we've found, is easier to read in a quiet moment than to listen to it being read from in a small group. It's also great for creating discussion that leads to growth! We are learning some new things about the Scriptures, and that's always great! I received a copy of The War on Christmas for review purposes, but was not compensated financially in any way. My endearment toward the musical, "The Sound of Music", goes clear back to when my twin sister and I were babies...and when our little brother joined our family when we were 2-1/2 years old. Guess what song my parents sang to us each night when they tucked us into bed? Edelweiss! When our oldest, Kelsi, was a baby, you can probably figure out which song we sang to her each night: Edelweiss! In fact, we still sing Edelweiss to our girls occasionally when we say goodnight to them at bedtime. Even as teenagers, they love it - along with the back scratches we give them while we sing. ☺ As a junior higher, I loved playing music from my mom's The Sound of Music piano book. Some of the songs were a bit too difficult for me, but I still enjoyed trying to play them. Now my daughter, Brittany, has fun playing out of the same book! When I heard that NBC was going to remake The Sound of Music, I was skeptical - yet curious. What I didn't realize at first was that this was going to be a LIVE event, on stage, as if I was sitting down in my living room, watching a live Broadway show! Wow. There will be no "Take 2" on Thursday night. That takes courage these days! Hmm...can anything top the original movie? The acting? The original soundtrack? Well, I decided to find out. I watched The Making of The Sound of Music Live to see if I could get any clues about whether or not the new, live version would be worth my time. I really enjoyed seeing the casting of the characters take place. As far as the actual acting goes, I can't really tell. I'll have to wait until Thursday night to find out...but the dancing looks wonderful! After listening to portions of the songs from The Sound of Music on iTunes (not an affiliate link), I can wholeheartedly state that I believe the new music is as good as the original. It is simply beautiful! I'm so excited about watching The Sound of Music - LIVE this Thursday that I've invited some friends over to have a The Sound of Music LIVE Viewing Party with me. Fun! I'd love to let you in on what I have planned for that night, including dinner, but I don't want to give it away to my friends just yet. So stay tuned! I'll be sharing here how we celebrated the release of this new classic musical with our friends. Here's a little preview of the upcoming LIVE broadcast this Thursday evening, December 5th at 8 p.m. (7 p.m. Central) on NBC. I hope you can work The Sound of Music - LIVE into your evening on Thursday! Let me know what you thought of it. For some of you, this may not apply...but since my family and I are followers of Jesus Christ, we have tried to make a thoughtful effort every December to bring more of Christ into our Christmas and less of the self-centered "give me, give me!" type of attitude. We've downplayed Santa and other secular versions of Christmas that can take over the true meaning of Christmas. If you enjoy the rhythm of the poem, 'Twas the Night Before Christmas by Clement Clarke Moor, then I think you are going to be pleasantly surprised at the similar rhythm of this new illustrated book, The First Christmas Night! (Email subscribers may want to click back to the original post in order to most easily view the photos and enter the giveaway contest.) About The First Christmas Night The First Christmas Night is a beautiful retelling of the birth of Jesus on that joyous night in Bethlehem so long ago. The poem begins with the arrival of Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem and winds though Christ’s birth, the angels’ appearance to the shepherds, and the visit by the Wise Men. The simple, yet elegant, verses will appeal to little ones and are accompanied by the rich acrylic illustrations of Christine Kornacki. Here's a sample of the poetry found between the covers of The First Christmas Night: ’Twas the very first Christmas when all through the town not a creature was stirring—there was not a sound. The moon shining bright in the heavens so high gave the look of midday to the Bethlehem sky. The animals were nestled in warm, cozy places with looks of contentment on each of their faces. |
Keith Christopher is an award-winning composer, arranger, lyricist, and author, and his musical talent is evident in the lyrical verses of The First Christmas Night. In addition to writing and producing, Keith is on the faculty at the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. He lives in Hendersonville, Tennessee, with his wife and two children. |
About the illustrator:
At a very early age, Christine Kornacki developed a love for painting and bringing stories to life. After receiving a BFA in illustration from the University of Hartford, her dreams of illustrating children's books began to take shape, including illustrating the best-selling The Sparkle Box for Ideal's Children's Books. Christine's recent work also includes illustrating the six-book series for the American Girl historical doll characters Marie-Grace and Cecile. She spends her days painting in her studio, which adjoins a charming cafe in New Haven, Connecticut. |

About this new book:
Joy In Our Journey's review ~ by Julie:
Christmas at Harmony Hill, by Ann Gabhart, takes place during the Civil War - when families and neighbors are fighting each other and dying for a cause they dearly believe in, each in their own way.
When Heather falls in love with Gideon Worth and marries him just as he is taking off to become a Yankee fighter, her Confederate family is torn; her father angry, her brother taking up the cause of the Confederates. It is difficult but Heather chooses her path to follow Gideon off to war; she is able to stay with him and become a washer woman for the company with which he is stationed. Then she becomes pregnant, and Gideon decides she can no longer stay with him, especially after she is seven months along and can no longer keep up with the troops.
Heather returns to her home, after a long and difficult journey. With great sorrow at having to leave her husband, she knows she is doing the right thing to bring her baby into a safer situation. But her father turns her away, saying she is no longer his daughter and she is not welcome in his home. She encounters much sadness at that. Because she also learns that her mother and two brothers have died in her two-year absence, she is beside herself with grief. Her sister, Beth, advises her to try to find their Aunt Sophrena, who lives not too far away at the Harmony Hill Shaker community.
Heather’s arrival at the Shaker community, and her first meeting with her Aunt Sophrena, brings her many surprises. First, her aunt (whom she has never met) is so like her own mother that she is nearly overcome with memories. Second, she is welcomed into the Shaker community in a way she never thought would be possible; she is not made to feel a part of the community, but they provide for her physical needs very well and assign her aunt to become her caretaker during her confinement with her pregnancy. It is an eye-opening experience for all of them.
Heather learns much about the Shakers and tries hard to understand some of their very strange beliefs and traditions. Sophrena comes to face her own doubts and longings after having spent over 25 years with the Shakers. This story is an education into a totally different kind of life than most Christians would know; it is hard to understand some of the beliefs that come to light, and it can be difficult to accept the sense in the type of community life they had built for themselves.
There is much to ponder in the way of forgiveness and love for one another as these characters intermingle and communicate. Much, much prayer goes up for protection of those involved in the war battles, the families left behind, and a greatly anticipated birth right at Christmas time. Conflict turns to victory as the story unfolds - but there are surprises to the very end.
About the author, Ann Gabhart:
I started writing when I was ten and have been writing ever since. I've now published twenty novels for adults and young adults. I married Darrell Gabhart, young and in love, but we defied the odds and are still married all these years later. Maybe because we went to church together and were committed to the Christian life. We have three children and nine wonderful grandchildren. I like walking in the fields and woods, finding wildflowers and spotting birds and wildlife while trying to keep in shape. I'm crazy about dogs, with three of my own and several neighbor dogs who like to hang out in my yard or take walks with me. |

Who is Norman Rockwell? Rockwell became famous for his American culture illustrations and artwork. He was born in the late 1800’s and died in the mid 1900’s. This movie tries to capture the feelings of many Norman Rockwell paintings.

I love reading Christian fiction, so I try my best to provide you with a number of books each month written by Christian authors - with biblical worldviews.
Why?
It's all about what we are exposing our minds to. (Yes, I know we shouldn't end sentences with a preposition. Please don't nag me.)
Reading a continuous stream of secular books that often impose anti-biblical values on the reader can end up doing damage to our souls.
Today, I'd like to let you know about a new book written by the mother/daughter team, Joyce and Alexandra Swann: The Force.
Before I began reading The Force, I first read through the Swanns' first science fiction book in this series: The Fourth Kingdom. Once I had finished that, I was ready for The Force. Can this new book be read as a stand-alone? Sure. But you will definitely understand more of what's going on if you're able to read The Fourth Kingdom first.
About the book:
When Jarrod and Joshua Sinclair are called in to consult with the FBI about the Hollywood Starlet murders, they immediately suspect their old nemesis, Josef Helmick, of creating clones of famous women for a visiting Saudi prince. Wasting no time, they hire retired detective Fred Kowalski and send him to Dubai to uncover Josef’s base of operations and build a case against him for the murders.
But Fred soon discovers that Helmick Enterprises is harboring a secret much darker than human trafficking. Fred must stop Helmick before he resurrects an ancient, diabolical Force in order to bring the entire human race under his control.
My review of The Force:
So...how was book 2 in this series? Well, from page 1 of The Force, I could tell that the authors had worked very hard to remedy some of those problems.
Even if they hadn't, I would have hardly been able to put down this book. The Force is a powerfully written book encompassing so many of the questions in the scientific community about cloning. It was action-packed, flowed well, and contained only a couple of monologues that were much shorter than those in book 1. There were a few basic editing problems (grammar, punctuation, spelling), but overall The Force was much better written than The Fourth Kingdom. If you enjoy science ficiton, you'll love The Force!
About the authors:
Joyce and Alexandra have co-authored two other novels, The Fourth Kingdom, and The Twelfth Juror, both of which were published in 2010.
Joyce’s personal story of her experiences raising and educating her family is chronicled in Looking Backward: My Twenty-Five Years as a Homeschooling Mother, published in February of 2011.
Her novel, The Warrior, which tells the story of one woman’s ten-year prayer vigil for a man she has never met, was released in May of 2012. She is also the author of two children’s books, Tales of Pig Isle and The McAloons, which began as stories that she told to entertain her grandchildren.
Alexandra is author of No Regrets: How Homeschooling Earned me a Master’s Degree at Age Sixteen and Writing for Today. She has been self-employed for over fourteen years and was the 2011 Chairwoman of the Board of the El Paso Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. She writes a regular blog, Paying for Protection, about the consequences of over-regulation and over-reaching government. Her novel, The Planner, which is the prequel to The Chosen, was published in June of 2012.

Thirty Days to Glory centers around Catherine Benson, who longs to do one great thing before she dies...and Elmer Grigsby, who hopes to stay seriously drunk until he slips out of the world unnoticed.
Against a Christmas backdrop, Catherine searches for purpose while fighting the infirmities of age and the best intentions of her children. She gains support in the battle from her faithful housekeeper and her quirky friends known as the Glory Circle Sisters.
Elmer isn’t supported by anyone, except maybe his cat. When he opens the last whiskey bottle of the month, he knows it is time to shuffle down to the post office and pick up his government check.
Somewhere in his fog, Elmer knows he was once a better man. That is why he stays in the fog.
When their destinies intersect one Tuesday in December, they both discover it is only Thirty Days to Glory.
About the author:
Author Kathy Nickerson writes from her home in rural Missouri, where she lives with her husband of nearly forty years. They are the parents of four children who grew up to become their best friends and who have given them a dozen grandchildren, so far. Kathy's eternal optimism comes from her mother, The Nicest Woman on Earth, and from a deep faith in the God who made Light to shine from darkness. |
Joy In Our Journey's review ~ by Julie:
It is a tough time, and the story is realistically told.
There are really only two main characters:
- Catherine Benson, a widow still living in the same house in which she spent most of her married years and those since and has no intention of ever leaving
- Elmer Grigsby, an elderly veteran living on his own almost in a homeless condition and attempting to drink himself to death.
The other characters in the story are very much a part of the life, especially of Catherine, and are extremely supportive and helpful to her, but she is still a completely independent and strong elderly woman.
The vulnerability of these two people is very real, especially to a reader who is also approaching “elderly” status, and the novel is written in such a way as to make one realize that many decisions must be made and expressed to loved ones before the end of life.
There are some great surprises in this story as well as sweet moments of interaction between the various characters. Thirty Days to Glory is a great novel with many thoughts to contemplate.

Willow is so excited that the Over-the-Top Circus has finally come to town!
The only problem is, that when left to her own devices, she can’t say “no” to some good things.
On the way to the show, she is distracted by enticing treats and fun that she just can’t turn down. Willow arrives late and is sad to find that not only has she has run out of time, but money, and she won’t be able to enjoy the pink cotton candy she’s been dreaming of.
Willow is given valuable advice and a second chance and is ultimately taught the lesson that sometimes in life you have to say “no” to good things to end up with something great!

Many of you read The Velveteen Rabbit as a child. It may have even been a favorite book of yours as you grew up and appreciated the message even more.
I'd like to introduce you to a very darling new book called Audrey Bunny. While it has a few similarities to The Velveteen Rabbit, it's also quite different. See below to enter the giveaway I'm holding for a brand new copy of Audrey Bunny!
I've met so many children over the last 25 years (including my five years of teaching in a public school) who struggle with feeling inept, unloved, and often bullied. They are insecure, live with constant feelings of awkwardness and rejection, and just don't fit in well in their classrooms and other social situations.
One of the blessings of homeschooling my children is that they haven't grown up constantly being mocked or bullied for their faith, their personality quirks (don't we all have some???!!!), or their appearance. In fact, I've noticed that many homeschooled youth in my area just have such wonderful, blossoming personalities that they aren't afraid to show the world, all because they aren't constantly being battered down by their cruel peers.
I won't say my girls have been too sheltered, though. They've dealt with favoritism at church, because they don't attend a public or private school. They love to learn and aren't afraid to show it, so sometimes they are teased or ignored because of that.
Audrey Bunny was written to show children the incredible value they have! They are so loved by God! I love the message of this new book, and I know you will, too. Audrey Bunny is a perfect book for youngsters to begin learning about their value with God, and the value of all other human beings, no matter how imperfect or different.
You've got to watch this book trailer. The illustrations are so darling!
